- El Cabrera Isn't Just A 1 Hit Golf Wonder- Singapore Tango Win
-
11/5/07- He wins
again...& this time in Singapore of all places. Angel
Cabrera smoked Tiger Woods earlier this year to take the US
Open, and now, the humble Argentinean...with a big smile lit it up again
in Singapore to win it over Vijay Singh, and other famous golf greats.
He doesn't speak English, smokes like there's no
tomorrow, and used to be a caddy himself -
but this Argentinean is quickly proving, ya can't mess with the
tango man.
Cabrera even won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf last month, an
exhibition tournament. For the
Singapore win, he received a check for $634,000 And now Cabrera, Mickelson, Vijay Singh and others head to
Shanghai for the HSBC Tournament.
Go
Argentina, it’s fantastic. Folks in his
home country just got a new president-a, and now they’re watchin’ a new golfing
champion make his way to lead golf greats around the world. It’s a good feelin’.

- Hispanic LA Galaxy Fans Counting Down Days for Beckham's Debut
-
David Beckham is on his way to launching the start of his soccer career in with the L.A. Galaxy, and it's not just jaded Los Angles celebrities who are excited. Hispanics from all around the Los Angeles area are excited to see this famous player.
The L.A. Galaxy's fan base is approximately 50% Hispanic, so really it should come at no surprise, - but it did come as a surprise to me to hear about Beckham's draw among Hispanics.
But it makes sense, soccer has the wild popularity of American football in Latin America, thus, it follows that Hispanics already know who Beckham is.
Broad Appeal:
The L.A. Galaxy's new soccer player will appeal not just to the average American housewife, but also to Hispanics who are already snapping up season tickets to go see what is the phenomenon of Becks.

- Argentina Knows Golf: Who's This Angel Cabrera Guy Who "Smoked" Tiger Woods
-
6/18/07- Smokin' during el game, while walking up the green, while talking to his caddy...this Cabrera guy, where'd he come from? He's like that guy from Iowa who came out of nowhere a few months ago to win the Masters.
Whew- did you hear that Tiger?...Buzzing Noise....Yeah, listen to that Tiger...It's the sound of the Midwest, and fiery Argentina passin' ya up. What's up Tiger? Talk to El Pansonsote. Is there such a thing as a Golf psychiatrist? Mebbe you need to go butter one up for a while. Toss up some questions, ya like- What do you think that golf ball was thinking when I missed that birdie...
Ya never know what might bring back that winning streak,.....you know?
Whew but this Cabrera guy (my hands are up in the air, and I'm doing the victory dance right now btw). I think everybody likes to see the underdog win, and that's what this guy was and did. El UNDERDOG, i proclaim him. (Good name huh?)
He used to be a caddy himself- Cabrera, and had to pay for expensivo lessons to learn the golf game. (Trust us , everybody in Argentina ain't interrupting their tango parties to go learn golf or anything, especially 20 years ago when Cabrera started. Que es golf? is more like it....)
Just a humble guy, and NO English! First time ever they had to use a translator to translate the acceptance speech at the US Open. Love it!
Woo-WOO.
Keep on swinging Cabrera - (but no worries Tiger, I don't think there's any danger of you losing your Nike, Tag Heuer, Accenture etc. contract just yet.)
Tango on Angel!

- Should Soccer Be Played At High Altitudes? FIFA Says NO
-

6/19/07- Late last month FIFA said it was setting a limit of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level for international games.
-
La Paz- 3,600 meters
-
Quito- 2,800 meters
-
Bogota- 2,700 meters
Andean nations including Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, & Colombia, are being hit by the ban.
Altitude Sickness
A friend of mine, Mary, used to live in Bolivia, and the altitude is definitely a factor, even for non-athletes. A friend got really sick visiting this friend of mine in Bolivia. So sick, they had to leave the country after 1 week because of their altitude sickness. .
And then a few years after Mary moved away, she went back to visit and got a terrible altitude sickness as well - and she had earlier lived there for 3 years.
Back to Soccer
Bolivia has won some major soccer victories over Brazil & Argentina in it's capital La Paz. Some say a large part of the reason for these victories has been the altitude.
What About Countries That Are HOT
That begs the question though, what about countries that have extreme heat, or extreme cold. Should games be avoided there because of the heat or cold? It's like football I guess.
Football teams that are used to scrimaging in the cold, are going to have a leg up over those that usually train in the calor (heat) and vice versa.
So at some point this "leveling" for weather has to level off. Where does it end?

- Spurs Are LeBoring?
-
6/15/07- Guest Blog by Roger Sanchez (College friend of El Pansonsote's - Pansonsote's on hiatus tonite - because he's out celebrating the Spurs win- probably drinking a few Michelada's - just a crazy guess...)
I live in DC, and was at the downtown ESPN zone, 4 and a half blocks from the White House watching the game. Are there no Spurs fans outside of San Antonio? It felt like me, against the entire, restaurant- bar-block etc...Same thing with game 3, game 2....etc.... Anywhere I've been this NBA Finals, I am one against everybody else.
I've been holding many mid-Spurs-Cav's play's discussions with folks occupying stools next to me in an effort to try & figure out why nobody gives the Spurs any kindness. At a table next to mine tonight, there were 2 guys- 1 was from Dallas...and had lived in Houston. Not even he was for the Spurs....
Another table during Game 3 reminded me that I was after all in the East Coast...home of the Eastern Conference. That made a a bit of sense....but still...not even a couple other Spurs fans???In this huge place? The guy I just sat next to though, agreed with another, different group of guys who I chatted with in Game 3: Spurs are boring - (he said). He went on to say, they're good, they do everything right, in a way it's boring --- they just have that luck- and with the Cav's, well, they're the underdogs.
It's a lonely thing being a Spurs fans up here, I tell ya! I was just reading about one of the Cav's players, Damon Jones, in yahoo.com: they ask him if he had ever thought about playing for the Spurs:- "I don't fit their profile," Jones, the Cavs' flashiest dresser and team clown said with a smile. "I have a very colorful personality. Not saying those guys don't, but that's never been an option for me."
Who needs flash? I certainly don't. It's too much drama. I admire the family, team, & spiritual focus along with the work ethic of the San Antonio Spurs. It may be a David Robinson legacy, but I think it's the thing that has gotten the Spurs to the Dynasty they are today.
Flash- nah, jewelry- nah, tricks and flashy dunks? Nope. It's just good 'ol fashioned playing - and the record speaks for 'ol fashioned playing. I mean, if I want flash- I can always go watch the Globetrotters....
LeBoring? I'll take a pass...

- Who is Gregg Popovich?
-
6/14/07- I was curious. Here's a guy I've been seeing year in and year out on the sidelines of the Spurs games, but one I didn't know too much about. So here's some info.
Wine collector - Did you know he's got over 3,000 bottles of wine? It's an extensive collection with some very rare bottles indeed.
Popovich's father was from Montenegro & his mother was from Croatia. (Perhaps that is why Popovich is so embracing of foreign cultures)
When coach at Pomona-Pitzer colleges, he lived for a year in a dorm with his family.(talk about building relationships with your players)
Graduated from the Air Force Academy with a degree in Soviet Studies. (Also has a masters in Physical Educ. and Sports Sciences)
Enjoys independent films
Often talks politics and non-sports subjects before Spurs practices
First joined the Spurs in 1987, as lead assistant coach.
Fired by the Spurs' former owner Red McCombs in 1992 (along with the entire staff). Came back to San Antonio in 1994
Married for 29 years to wife Erin, has two kids: Micky and Jill
- LeBron's New Baby!
-
6/14/07- LeBron and his girlfriend, Savannah Brinson, had their second son in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Bryce Maximus James was born Thursday at 12:51 am. Hopefully LeBron got a little bit of sleep to rest up for tonight's game.
A spokesman for the Cleveland Cav's said the boy was a healthy 8 pounds, 6 ounces, 21 inches long, and born at the Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital.
- Spurs & Changes On The Team Next Season?
-
6/14/07- Many of you may have noticed at some point, that i'm a Spurs fan (that goes without saying...)
So with interest I've been hearing about the Spurs' assistant head coach, PJ Carlesimo, who may be in the process of being wooed away from the NBA's power team. By who? The Seattle SuperSonics. Come on PJ, the weather's rainy up there, and no Tex-Mex, at least no Taco Cabana open 24 hours a day.
We understand though the lure of heading up your own NBA team as head coach. Of course we wonder at Carlesimo's ability to develop those Pop like relationships with his players. He just doesn't strike me as that kind of dad-like figure Pop is. Calesimo himself has admitted that at his prior coaching jobs at Golden State and Portland: I don't think I did nearly as good a job as Pop does off the court.
Of course, with 5 years on the Spurs team working next to Pop, he's probably learned alot of Popisms. And hey, maybe he if he goes off to head that team, maybe in a few years the Spurs will be facing off the SuperSonics in the NBA playoffs. Wouldn't that be a scene?
On another note...will Robert Horry be back for a 16th season? Come on Horry! I really hope so. This team is great, and Horry says if he does come back, it would be with the Spurs. Come on Horry!

- Red Sox-Yankees Boston Game & The Blonde Masks Who Came to See It
-
6/6/07- I may be stepping on La Gossipa's toes here, but... fans brought out blond masks to the Red Sox-Yankees Boston game last weekend. It was a play on the woman A-Rod was seen fraternizing with last weekend - not his wife. Here's a pic. Gambling911 writes:
Jim Phipps of Wakefield, Mass., brought the masks - 33 leftovers from a birthday party - and passed them out to people in his section.
"I was watching 'Good Morning America' and they showed a picture from The Post of A-Rod and I said, 'Hey, that girl looks like that mask - and bingo!'"

- The Spurs WIN IT! I Have No Opinion....(GO SPURS!)
-
5/31/07 - Oh the game was fantastic last night. The Spurs have definitely got it again this year. My hometown team is on its way to the finals. I couldn't ask for anything better...between that and a carne guisada taco, life is definitely oh so good!
The 4th quarter was such a joke, Pop didn't play his top players...and just let 'em rest out on the bench. The Spurs got it, especially on the odd numbered years....(Numerologists have got to be going crazy with that.) They made the finals and won 'em in '99, '03, & '05. And they came sooo close in '01 it hurt when they lost that conference final. (And they haven't done too shady even years either folks.)
Can you believe that fans even started doing the wave in the 4th, cause they were just waiting out the win. Even David Robinson took part.
I remember back when I was a kid (wa-ay back) growing up in San Antonio. Used to go to Spurs games with the folks in the old S.A. convention center. Oh, the games were empty. & I used to stare at the jersey's up on the ceiling and wonder if the Spurs would ever make it. I had to wait...but boy, boy have they made it.
I gotta score me some finals tickets. Anybody know anybody with season tickets who needs an instant friend. Lemme know....

- Juan Pablo Montoya & Photographer Walk Into Each Other: Complaining Ensues
-
5/8/07- Remind me not to walk into Juan Pablo Montoya. I have nothing against the guy, just lately it seems like he's claiming more than his fair share of negative press. A couple weeks ago he was giving camerapeople the finger. This reminded us of some video from last year, where he literally had a run-in with another camera guy. He's a talented guy,but really, I'll say he needs to reign in that ego - just a little bit.
Let's just say: don't cross Juan Pablo Montoya.

- Will Oscar De la Hoya Really Retire? Mum's the Word
-
5/7/07- Is De la Hoya really saying see ya to boxing? His business partners say: nope. According to the Associated Press, they don’t see this as the last match up for de la Hoya. They think de la Hoya still has a lot of fight in him. In the past de la Hoya has tossed about the possibility of rematch fights with Felix Trinidad. And now, after Saturday’s May 5th bout, word is a rematch is a possibility.
Millie Corretjer, de la Hoya’s wife said something different to the The LA Times. "I have a feeling this may be it for him," she says a few minutes later while Oscar has gone on to shower. "I know this because he just told me…. Even though he didn't win, he won't have regrets.
Well, I guess de la Hoya hasn’t chatted it up with Millie yet. He told the Associated Press: "I'm going to be very smart about the situation," De La Hoya said. "I will go home and watch the fight and see how my movements were, how my body reacted, and analyze the situation. I'll wait and see. I'll analyze the whole thing and think about it." (Come back anyone?)
Ah, the lure of those pesky endorphins, public adulation, fame, fortune, success, millions…hmm, I don’t blame him now that I mention it.
Oscar…when’s the rematch? Me and my virgin Micheladas are listos!
(BTW, this is a bit off topic, but The Washington Post had a good article on de la Hoya and his preparing for the match, but the article name I found offensive: From Golden to Olden.) Do they not get old over there? Guess they must’ve found the fountain of youth over there, so it’s okay to criticize someone else for aging. Geez.)

- Mayweather Back in The Fight? Maybe…Just Maybe
-
5/7/07- Retire? Unretire? Unretire retire? Retire unretire retire?...Retire, unretire, retire, unretire....etc...and etc.
Well, before and shortly after the long-awaited de la Hoya-Mayweather fight, Mayweather was all about retiring – saying he had nothing left to prove. (He’s right, he ain’t got much more to do out there. Case in point: winning Saturday’s May 5th bout with scores of 116-112, 115-113, 113-115 on the scorecards. Also, Mayweather’s unbeaten in 38 professional bouts vs. De la Hoya’s 38 wins and five losses.)
Well, speculators say, nuh-uh, Mayweather’s retirement is as likely as Mike Tyson joining an inner peace/meditation rally. Mayweather’s recording label, Philthy Rich Records’ slogan for its t-shirts is: If you don't like money, you don't like us.
Boxing money is too big, and Mayweather makes millions, but self-admittedly he says he spends millions. Right after saying he was outta boxing, Mayweather opened a window for his comeback saying; "He's a good guy, I'm a good guy, and we give the sport our all…I believe Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions are going to meet again."
